South African police say controversial mining magnate Brett Kibble has been shot several times and killed while at the wheel of his car.
Authorities say the 41-year-old Mr. Kibble was found dead Tuesday night in his car on a highway overpass in Johannesburg.
They have opened a murder investigation.
Mr. Kibble's lawyer told a South African radio station (SAFM) it appears there was a malicious intent to kill the businessman.
He was the son of mining mogul Roger Kibble. The younger Mr. Kibble had been executive director of three mining companies until he stepped down last month because the companies ran into financial problems.
Brett Kibble, who was white, was a staunch supporter of efforts to create more opportunities for blacks in South Africa's business community.
The ruling African National Congress said it was "shocked and saddened" by Mr. Kibble's death.
