Stage Set for 78th Academy Awards

The stage is set for the 78th Academy Awards - the glamorous annual event highlighting the film industry's choices for the year's best movies.

Hollywood's biggest stars are gathering for the much-anticipated ceremony known as the Oscars, that is watched on television by millions of people around the world.

Among the movies nominated for several awards this year are Taiwan-born director Ang Lee's film Brokeback Mountain about two homosexual cowboys who struggle with their relationship; the story of American writer Truman Capote's 1960's novel In Cold Blood depicted in the film Capote; and Good Night and Good Luck about veteran American newsman Edward R. Murrow.

Another strong contender is Crash, about racial and ethnic prejudice in Los Angeles.

The Oscars ceremony lasts several hours and throngs of cameras jockey to capture every moment, from the stars preening on the red carpet, to tearful award speeches and post-ceremony parties that last well into the night.
