The U.S. Secret Service says it arrested a person with a weapon for assault in the vicinity of a Washington office building housing Iran's interests section.

In a statement on Twitter Wednesday, the Secret Service said its agents detained the individual after reports of shots fired near the Iranian diplomatic office which is located inside the Pakistani embassy.

The Secret Service said it determined that no shots were fired in Wednesday's incident, but it detained the armed individual who was at the location for assault and handed him to police.

Iranian state media described the incident as an "armed attack." Iran's official IRNA news agency posted a photo of what it said was the assailant being detained inside the Iranian diplomatic office by a U.S. agent.

The U.S. Secret Service said it is investigating the incident.
