Armory Explosion Kills 17 Chinese Soldiers

Chinese state media say an explosion at a weapons storage facility in central China has killed at least 17 soldiers.

The official Xinhua news agency said the blast took place in Hunan province late Tuesday as soldiers were piling up ammunitions.

Officials say the cause of the blast is under investigation, but is believed to be an accident. No civilians were reported to be hurt.

China's military, which operates with a high degree of secrecy in such matters, has released no other details on the incident.
