Iraqi officials say insurgents have attacked a military checkpoint on the southern outskirts of Baghdad, killing five soldiers.
Authorities say the attack on the army post happened Wednesday in the village of Radhwaniyah. No other details were immediately available. Gunmen had attacked an Iraqi police watchtower in the same village on Monday, killing two officers.
In another incident, police say a roadside bomb went off in eastern Baghdad Wednesday, wounding three people.
Violence has dropped significantly across Iraq since its peak between 2005 to 2007, but attacks remain common in some areas, including parts of Baghdad.
