Four year old Hong Xiaorou was killed Wednesday in southeastern Fujian province as her family tried to stop a construction crew from flattening land next to their property.

Images of the girl's body started circulating on Chinese social media shortly after the incident. Local authorities say the death was an accident.

Land seizures have become a common source of anger across China, where rapid urbanization has led to many incidents of forcible evictions, with little compensation for those affected.
