California Republican Tops List of Wealthiest Lawmakers

Republican Daniel Issa of California has topped the list of the 50 richest members of the U.S. Congress.

The annual list, released Tuesday by The Hill newspaper, is based on financial disclosure forms filed by the lawmakers.

Issa, who earned his fortune in the car alarm business, has a minimum net worth of $355 million. He takes over the top spot from Texas Republican Congressman Michael McCaul, whose wife comes from the family that runs Clear Channel Communications and has a net worth of at least $101 million.

They were followed by Democratic Senator John Warner of Virginia.

Of the 50 richest members of Congress, 29 were Republicans. That chamber fared better than the Senate, with 37 of Congress's most financially well-off coming from the House.

Lawmakers who are tipped as possible contenders for the White House in 2016 were scattered across the prosperity board.

Republican Congressman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, who was Mitt Romney's running mate in the 2012 presidential elections, is worth at least $2.3 million.
