The captain of Honduras' national soccer team, Arnold Peralta, was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting Thursday.
Police say he was gunned down in a shopping mall parking lot in his hometown of La Ceiba, on the Caribbean coast.
Police say it appears the killing was deliberate because the 26-year-old Peralta was not robbed.
Peralta played midfield for the Honduran national team and was scheduled to play a friendly match against the Cuban national team next week.
He played on the 2012 Summer Olympic team and formerly was a member of a Scottish football club.
Honduras is one of the world's most violent countries, plagued by poverty and drug-treated gang murders.
