A mudslide in western India has killed 17 people in a village, and officials fear hundreds more may be missing.
Road damage and heavy rains have hindered rescue efforts by emergency teams in the Pune district of Maharashtra state, where a hill collapsed.
A man headed to see family in the remote town of Ambegaon found a disaster site.
"I had come to visit my relatives. I often come here. When I came I discovered that the entire village has been destroyed," said Ranadeep Gokhale.
Sandeep Rai Rathore, inspector general of the National Disaster Response Force, said there could be as many as 200 victims.
"There were number of people who were feared to be trapped, and the number could be anything between 50 and above and less than 200. So we are just waiting once the rescue operations begin in full swing," he said.
Landslides are common in the area during the monsoon season, from June through September.
Heavy rain has continued to lash the region over the past four days.
The Pune district about is 151 kilometers southeast of Mumbai, India's commercial capital.
