First Qatari Soldier Killed in Yemen Conflict

FILE - A Shiite fighter known as a Houthi stands guard in front of buildings destroyed by a Saudi-led airstrike in Sana'a, Sept. 5, 2015.

A Qatari soldier fighting with the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen has been killed, Qatar's first reported casualty in the conflict.

Qatar's state-run news agency identified the soldier as Mohammed Hamed Suleiman.

It was not immediately clear how he was killed.

The conflict in Yemen pits Iranian-backed Houthi Shi'ite rebels and allied army units against forces loyal to the internationally recognized government, as well as southern separatists and militants.

According to the United Nations, more than 5,600 Yemenis have been killed since the Saudi-led intervention began in March. Dozens of soldiers from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and other coalition members have also died.
