A man injured in bomb blasts is carried outside the venue of a political rally in Patna, India, Oct. 27, 2013.
A series of bomb explosions has killed at least five people and wounded more than 80 in eastern India.

The chief minister of Bihar state says at least some of the bombs appeared to be attacks on a rally for an opposition candidate for prime minister.

At least six explosions were reported Sunday across Patna, the capital of Bihar state, shorty before the opposition candidate was to make a speech. The chief minister of Bihar said security was tight for the rally, and there was no prior intelligence about the bomb attacks.

Thousands of people had gathered in Patna for the rally organized by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party. National elections are due by May 2014. The rally went ahead as scheduled.
