Officials in eastern India say a bomb blast has killed five people.

Authorities say nine people were wounded late Thursday by the bomb that was attached to a bicycle near Jalpaiguri, a town several hundred kilometers north of Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal state. The death toll could rise as some of those wounded are in critical condition.

Police are investigating whether the blast was carried out by a rebel group fighting for independence in the region.
