Furniture Salesman Loses $7 Million Superbowl Bet With Customers

A U.S. furniture salesman promised free furniture to customers if the Seattle Seahawks won the Super Bowl, and is now out $7 million.

The Texas businessman made the losing wager at his two furniture stores in the two weeks before the annual American football championship.

Jim McIngvale, known as "Mattress Mack," promised customers their money back if they spent more than $6,000 in his stores ahead of the big game, and if the Seahawks, who were slight underdogs, beat the Denver Broncos. The Seahawks won handily, 43-8, in one of the most lopsided Super Bowl contests in history.

McIngvale said about 1,000 people participated in the deal.

The businessman told the local Houston Chronicle that the gamble was not a total loss. He says he made a lot of customers happy and is building customers for life.
