Gergiev To Become Munich Philharmonic Principal Conductor

World renowned Russian conductor Valery Gergiev has been appointed principal conductor of the Munich Philharmonic starting with the 2015-16 season.

Gergiev, the artistic director of the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, signed a-four-year contract with the German orchestra Friday. He will succeed U.S. conductor Lorin Maazel.

Gergiev will keep his position at the Mariinsky Theatre, but leave his other job as principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra in early 2015.

The decision was made last month by the Munich town council.

The head of the city's Department of Arts and Culture, Dr. Hans-Georg Küppers, says Gergiev is one of the most important, influential, and effective conductors of our time.
