The head of the public health department in Afghanistan's northern Kunduz province has been killed in a bombing. Provincial officials say a bomb planted Azizullah Safari's private clinic exploded, killing him and injuring at least two other people on Tuesday.

In eastern Afghanistan, the interior ministry said a female suicide bomber attacked a police post in the Shigal district of Kunar province on Monday, wounding 18 people, including three police officers.

Suicide bombings are a common tactic used by Taliban and al-Qaida-linked militants, but women rarely carry out the attacks.

Meanwhile in the south, NATO says a joint NATO and Afghan force captured the Taliban's recently-appointed chief of finance for Baghlan province during an operation in Helmand province late Monday.

Elsewhere in Helmand, the British defense ministry says a British Royal Marine was killed Tuesday in the Sangin district during a firefight with insurgents. Another British Royal Marine was killed in an explosion in Sangin on Monday. The deaths bring the number of British soldiers killed in Afghanistan since 2001 to 302.

Meanwhile, U.S. special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke continues his visit to Afghanistan. Holbrooke met with Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Monday and also visited Kandahar province.
