update

Iranian aviation officials say a passenger plane has crashed on the outskirts of Tehran, killing 39 people.

Authorities say the plane crashed shortly after taking off Sunday, on a road near Tehran's Mehrabab airport.

The aircraft, an Iranian built version of an Antonov-140 operated by Sepahan Air, was heading to Tabas, a town in eastern Iran.

Initial reports said everyone on the plane - 40 passengers and eight crew - had died. But later, authorities said nine people had survived.
