U.S. wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne Johnson, also known as "The Rock," has topped Forbes magazine's yearly list of highest paid actors, earning $64.5 million last year.

Johnson, one of the stars of the Fast and Furious franchise, collected advance fees for the eighth installment of the movie series, as well as earning a hefty sum from the action comedy Central Intelligence.

The list is calculated based on an actor's earnings from the year's jobs in movies and television, as well as commercial endorsements.

No. 2 on the list is Hong Kong-born Jackie Chan, who is famous in the United States, but also a prolific performer and producer in the Chinese market. He brought in $61 million last year.

U.S. actor Matt Damon was third with $55 million, buoyed by the success of his film The Martian. Rounding out the top five on the list, released Thursday, were Tom Cruise with $53 million and Johnny Depp with $48 million.

Further down on the list are two Bollywood actors, Shah Rukh Khan in eighth place with $33 million and Kumar Akshay in 10th place with $31 million.

Forbes released its list of top-earning female actors Tuesday. Despite the $46 million made by top earner Jennifer Lawrence, the list highlighted the significant pay gap between men and women at the highest echelons of the entertainment industry.

Lawrence was followed by Melissa McCarthy with $33 million and Scarlett Johansson with $25 million.

The women's list also included Chinese actress Fan Bingbing at No. 5 with $17 million, and Bollywood star Deepika Padukone at No. 10 with $10 million.
