Maldives Parliament Impeaches Jailed Vice President

FILE - Maldives Vice President Ahmed Adeeb's lawyer Hussain Shameem speaks to the press in Male, Maldives, Oct. 24, 2015.

The parliament in the Maldives voted Thursday to impeach Vice President Ahmed Adeeb, who was arrested last month on suspicion of being involved in an assassination attempt against the country's president.

The vote was 61 members in favor and none against. It came a day after President Abdulla Yameen declared a 30-day state of emergency because of a "threat to national security."

Yameen's wife and two other people were wounded in a September explosion on his speed boat. The president was not hurt in what officials have deemed an attempt to kill him.

On Monday, a remote-controlled explosive device was found planted on a vehicle parked near the president's official residence. No one claimed responsibility for placing the device, which was safely defused.
