June is a month of high school and college graduation for millions of American families and the Obamas are no different.

President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle proudly watched their older daughter, Malia, accept her high school diploma Friday at Sidwell Friends School in Washington.

The president said earlier that he would probably end up "sobbing" as he watched his daughter end a major chapter in her young life.

He called Malia "one of my best friends."

Malia turns 18 on July 4. She is taking a year off before entering Harvard in the fall of 2017.

The White House has not disclosed what she plans to do during her year away from the classroom.

Friday was actually a double celebration for the Obamas. Their younger daughter, Sasha, celebrated her 15th birthday. She also attends Sidwell Friends.
