Pakistan Wants to Ban Skype in Karachi

Officials in Pakistan's Sindh province say they want to ban several Web-based forms of communication.

Provincial Information Minister Sharjeel Memon said Thursday Sindh is seeking at least a three-month ban on Skype, Whatsapp, Viber, Tango and other networks. He said they are used by insurgents to plan attacks.

The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority must approved the ban.

Sindh's capital is Karachi, Pakistan's economic hub. Karachi is plagued by Islamist militant and sectarian violence.

Pakistan blocked YouTube last year after an anti-Islamic video was posted online.
