A suspected U.S. drone strike in Yemen has killed six al-Qaida militants.

Officials in Yemen said the airstrike Monday targeted a car carrying the militants in Marib province, east of the capital Sana’a.

The U.S. does not comment on individual drone strikes, but has repeatedly used unmanned aircraft to target al-Qaida members in Yemen.

Monday's attack comes as Yemen's military continues an offensive to try to drive al-Qaida out of its strongholds in the southern part of the country. The army says it has killed dozens of militants since launching the operation two weeks ago.

Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula is one of the terror group's most active branches, and has carried out numerous attacks against military targets, tourists and diplomats in recent years.

Suspected militants have carried out reprisal attacks in response to the Yemeni military operation, including a suicide bombing Sunday that killed at least 12 officers outside a police station in the city of Mukalla.
