Top U.S. Diplomat Arrives in Cairo for Start of Mideast Trip

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has arrived in Egypt on the first stop of his nine-day diplomatic mission to the Middle East and Europe.

Kerry's visit to Cairo Sunday comes one day before the start of the trial of ousted president Mohamed Morsi, who was removed from power by the military in July and charged with inciting the killing of protesters demonstrating outside the presidential palace in December.

The Obama administration has frozen some of its annual $1.3 billion in annual military aid to Egypt because of the bloodshed and political turmoil.

Kerry travels to Saudi Arabia later Sunday for talks with Saudi leaders about Egypt, the Syrian civil war and negotiations over Iran's nuclear program.

Kerry's other stops on his mission include Bethlehem, where he will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. He will also visit Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Algeria, Morocco and Poland.
