Ukraine's government says it has banned former prime minister and lead opposition figure Yulia Tymoshenko from leaving the country to attend a meeting of top officials in Brussels.

Tymoshenko is under investigation for corruption and abuse of office while she led the government from 2007 to 2010. She has denied the charges, and said she is the subject of political repression.

Ukrainian prosecutors Monday said they imposed the travel ban because they fear Tymoshenko might flee the country.

The former prime minister narrowly lost her 2010 presidential bid to rival Viktor Yanukovich. Tymoshenko was one of the leaders of the so-called "Orange Revolution" in 2004 that denied Yanukovich victory in his first bid for the presidency.
