Rafael Nadal, of Spain, reacts after a point against Novak Djokovic, of Serbia, during the men's singles final of the 2013 U.S. Open tennis tournament, Sept. 9, 2013, in New York.
Spain's Rafael Nadal has won 2013 U.S. Open tennis championship in New York, defeating number one seeded Novak Djokovic 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 Monday night.

With Spain's Queen Sophia among the spectators at Arthur Ashe Stadium, the 27-year-old Nadal, seeded number two, outlasted his Serbian opponent for his 13th career Grand Slam title. Nadal , who won the French Open earlier this year, is now third on the all-time men's list behind Roger Federer with 17 and Pete Sampras with 14 Grand Slam titles.

Nadal missed last year's U.S. Open due to a knee injury.

Monday's match was the 37th meeting between Nadal and Djokovic, and their third in a U.S. Open final in the last four years.

Nadal won the 2010 title, with Djokovic winning the 2011 trophy.
