US Senator Expresses Optimism for Immigration Overhaul Bill

A leading U.S senator says he is confident his chamber will approve a landmark immigration reform bill as the U.S. Congress returns to work

Appearing Sunday on the weekly public affairs television show "Meet the Press," New York Democrat Charles Schumer said he is confident the bill will pass by July 4th, the day the United States celebrates its Independence Day. Schumer is one of a group of eight bipartisan senators who crafted the bill that would overhaul the U.S. immigration system, including creating a pathway to citizenship for some millions of undocumented foreign workers in the U.S.

But on another public affairs show, "State of the Union," Florida Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen said the Republican-held House of Representatives will not consider the Senate bill, even if it passes, and that the House is working on its own version of immigration reform.

Unlike the Senate's comprehensive efforts, House lawmakers are considering a more piecemeal approach to immigration reform.
