Voters are going to the polls across the United States on Tuesday, casting ballots in a midterm election that will determine the control of U.S. Congress during the remaining two years of President Donald Trump’s term.

All 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives are up for election along with 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats.

The Republican Party held majority in both chambers heading into the election, while the Democratic Party is hoping to flip enough seats in its favor to take back control of the legislative body.

Voters in many states were able to cast ballots ahead of Tuesday’s Election Day, with a combination of in-person early voting and mail-in ballots available in most areas. More than 57 million people cast early ballots, according to the University of Florida Election Lab.

In addition to the U.S. congressional races, there are also elections for governor in 36 of the country’s 50 states, as well as members of state legislatures and other local races.

More than 54 million voters had already cast their ballots either in person or by mail by Monday, according to the University of Florida Election Lab. During the last midterm election in 2022, there were about 112 million total votes.

Prominent figures used weekend rallies to push for support, including former Vice President Kamala Harris boosting Democratic candidates in California. President Trump promoted Republicans in Kansas and Iowa, and he made a final pitch for support Monday during an event in Washington.

Republicans held a 53-47 Senate majority heading into the election. Some of the most closely watched races for control of the Senate are in Alaska, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Ohio, and Texas.

In the House, Republicans hold a 219-214 advantage. History suggests Republicans could have a more difficult time holding their House majority, as the party of the president has lost an average of 23 seats during midterm elections dating back to 1934.

Those elected Tuesday will take office on January 3, 2027.
