U.S. Workers Begin Furloughs

U.S. air travelers are braced for possible delays Monday as air traffic controllers begin the first of a series of furloughs resulting from U.S. spending cuts.

The furloughs officially went into effect Sunday, but the real test of airline efficiency comes on Monday, the first day of the business week.

Sunday, travelers reported some delays at New York airports and at Los Angeles.

The furloughs have forced officials to cut back on the number of air traffic controllers working at any one time, mandating a reduction in the number of planes that can be in the air at the same time.

Cuts in other areas are taking place as well, in hopes of saving some $637 million in budget cuts.
