Haitian President Michel Martelly has picked veteran politician and former mayor of Port-au-Prince Evans Paul to be the next prime minister.

If approved, Paul would take over from Florence Duperval Guillaume, who was named interim prime minister on Sunday as a temporary replacement for Laurent Lamothe.

Lamothe was forced to resign earlier this month following several weeks of protests.

Lamothe was Haiti's longest serving prime minister, holding office for 31 months. A presidential commission had called for his resignation to resolve an ongoing stalemate over legislative elections that sparked violent protests in the capital.
