Villagers in northern Nigeria say suspected Islamic militants shot dead at least 12 people last week in Borno state, while three others drowned in a river trying to escape.

Police Sunday confirmed the attack but provided no details.

The gunmen raided the fishing village of Gashigar, near the border with Niger. It came days after similar attacks on neighboring towns.

Residents complain about what they say is a lack of security in the area.

They blame the shootings on the Islamic militant group Boko Haram, which has been terrorizing northern Nigeria as it tries to turn it into a conservative Islamic state.
