Woman Charged in Deaths of 8 Children in Australia

Australian police have charged a woman with murder in the stabbing deaths of eight children.

Queensland police said 37-year-old Mersane Warria was charged Sunday with eight counts of murder in a bedside hearing at a hospital in the city of Cairns where she is recovering from stab wounds.

The woman was the mother of seven of the children. The eighth was her niece.

Queensland state police were called to a house in the Cairns suburb of Manor Friday morning and found a wounded woman and the bodies of four girls and four boys aged 18 months to 14 years.

Police have contacted the five fathers of the children. Authorities have not yet stated how the children died.

Police has taken more than 100 witness statements.
