Italy reopened its embassy in the Libyan capital Tripoli this week – the first Western country to do so since most pulled out in 2015 as the conflict between rival factions worsened. The chaos has allowed Libya to become the major gateway for migrants to Italy. But, as Henry Ridgwell reports, analysts say Italy’s move is also aimed at countering increased Russian influence in Libya’s fragile politics.
