Philippine Police Arrest Retired General for Declaring Revolutionary Government

Police in the Philippines have detained an 80-year old former defense secretary, one day after he declared himself president of a "revolutionary government."

Authorities say retired general Fortunato Abat and two other members of his self-proclaimed cabinet were arrested Thursday in Manila and will face charges of sedition.

General Abat had urged the Philippine military and the public to support the ouster of President Gloria Arroyo. Ms. Arroyo has come under heavy criticism by those who allege she cheated to win the May 2004 presidential elections.

Speculation has been increasing in the Philippines in recent weeks that a new military uprising is being planned against President Arroyo.
