Afghan, Coalition Forces Target Bomb Networks

Afghan and coalition forces said they have killed one suspected militant and detained four others during operations in southern and eastern Afghanistan.

In a joint statement released Thursday the forces said they targeted bomb-making (improvised explosive device) networks in Kandahar and Khost provinces.

The joint forces, acting on information from local citizens, targeted a compound Thursday in Maywand district in Kandahar, killing one militant, detaining two others and confiscating bomb-making materials.

In Khost, Afghan special forces and coalition soldiers detained two suspected members of the Haqqani network without firing a shot. The network is run by Afghan militant leader Jalaluddin Haqqani, who authorities believe operates from neighboring Pakistan.

The United States alleges the network has ties to al-Qaida and Pakistani intelligence agents.
