Bahrain Protesters Mark Uprising

Bahrain

Protesters took to the streets of Bahrain Saturday on the fourth anniversary of an uprising calling for widespread reform in the country.

Protests by the majority Shi'ite opposition in Bahrain have persisted since the 2011 Arab Spring uprisings, in which a wave of pro-democracy movements occurred throughout the region.

Demonstrators have demanded democratic reforms and an end to what they say is the discrimination by Bahrain's Sunni rulers.

Bahrain, an important U.S. ally, is home to the U.S. Fifth Fleet and is part of the U.S.-led coalition against the Islamic State militant group.
