Blasts Outside Baghdad Kill 9

Nine people were killed in Iraq after three car bombs exploded at outdoor markets and on a street full of shops in the city of Hillah, near the capital, Baghdad.

Thursday’s bombing also left 21 people wounded and destroyed several vehicles outside a restaurant.

It was the deadliest attack in a series of incidents across the country Thursday that left at least 29 people dead.

A spike in attacks in Iraq has raised fears about a return of the sectarian bloodshed that pushed the country to the brink of civil war in 2006-2007.

Violence has been on the rise since April, when the government launched a bloody crackdown on a Sunni protest camp.
