Cambodia Frees Russian Businessman Wanted by Moscow in Alleged Scam

Russian real estate tycoon Sergei Polonsky leaves the Appeals Court after a hearing in Phnom Penh, Jan. 9, 2014.

A Cambodian court has freed a Russian businessman wanted by Moscow on accusations of stealing tens of millions of dollars. The court also suspended extradition proceedings against him.

The court in Sihanoukville released Sergei Polonsky on Monday, saying he could not be extradited because he faces trial in Cambodia on charges of attacking the crew of a boat during a dispute.

Russia wants Polonsky for allegedly embezzling $172 million in a real estate scam.
