Magnitude 6.9 Earthquake Hits Peru

A magnitude 6.9 earthquake has hit a sparsely populated area of southern Peru.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake struck late Sunday 42 kilometers east-northeast of the town of Tambo and about 467 kilometers southeast of the capital, Lima, where residents felt slight shaking.

The survey said the earthquake had a depth of 101 kilometers.

Peru's civil defense institute said there were no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage.
