Thousands of dead sardines washed against the shore of the Laraquete River in Chile, Monday, February 15.

Samples taken at the site indicate that the dead fish are the result of a natural phenomena. According to reports, around 3,000 tons of fish migrated from the sea to rivers like the Laraquete, straining oxygen levels in the waterways.

A dozen similar occurrences have been reported along Chile’s shoreline. (AP)
