EU Commission Recommends Membership Talks with Serbia

Members of the Serbian government attend a session in Belgrade, Serbia, April 22, 2013.

The European Union's executive commission has recommended opening membership negotiations with Serbia.

The Serbian government has approved a potentially landmark agreement to normalize relations with Kosovo that could end years of tensions, therefore putting the Balkan rivals on a path to EU membership.

Noting Serbia's deal with its former province, Kosovo, the commission issued a report Monday to EU member nations and parliament recommending that negotiations with Serbia be started.
