Ax-wielding Assailant Wounds 3 Passengers on German Train

German emergency services workers work in the area where a man with an ax attacked passengers on a train near the city of Wuerzburg, Germany, early July 19, 2016.

German news agencies are reporting multiple casualties aboard a train in southern Germany, after an ax-wielding man went on a rampage before being shot to death.

Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann described the attacker as a 17-year-old Afghan national who lived in the German town of Ochsenfurt.

Earlier reports, quoting Wurzburg police, said the attacker struck on a regional train about 9 p.m. local time with "blunt and slashing" weapons described by witnesses as an ax and a knife. The assailant was later shot dead as he attempted to flee the scene.

Police said at least three passengers suffered serious wounds.

Authorities have not speculated on a motive for the attack. They say the train route between Ochsenfurt and Wurzburg has been closed.
