Gunmen Kill 5 Egyptian Police

Beni-Suef Province, Egypt

Masked gunmen have attacked a checkpoint south of Cairo, killing five Egyptian policemen and wounding two others.

The attack happened early Thursday in Beni Suef province, about 100 kilometers from the capital.

Authorities said the gunmen were riding motorcycles and fled the area after the shooting.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Islamist militants have been blamed for a number of attacks against Egyptian security forces since the country's military ousted president Mohamed Morsi in July.

The shootings Thursday come days before the anniversary of the 2011 popular uprising that forced longtime leader Hosni Mubarak from power.
