Insurgents Target Iraqi Police Headquarters

At least six people have been killed and at least 70 injured in an insurgent attack on a police intelligence headquarters in the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk.

Security forces and attackers engaged in a two-hour gun battle Wednesday at the complex, where explosions could be heard.

Kirkuk Governor Najmadin Karim told VOA's Kurdish service that government forces had regained full control by midnight, local time.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but Sunni Muslim insurgents linked to al-Qaida have regularly hit targets linked to Iraq's Shi'ite-led government and security services.

The areas around Kirkuk are known al-Qaida strongholds.
