Iraqi Kurdish Leader Vows to Defend Syrian Kurds

The president of Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan region has threatened to intervene to defend the Kurdish population caught up in Syria's unrest.

In a statement posted online Saturday, Massoud Barzani said if Kurds in Syria are under threat, then Iraqi Kurdistan will "make use of all its capabilities" to defend them.

Barzani offered no specifics as to how he planned to protect Syrian Kurds.

Kurds make up about 10 percent of Syria's population and are concentrated in the country's north, near the border with Iraq and Turkey.
