Israel Strike Targets Islamic Jihad Member in Gaza

The Israeli military says it has carried out an airstrike in the northern Gaza Strip targeting a Palestinian militant Israel says had fired rockets into the country last week.

The Israeli air force said it hit Ahmed Saad, a 22-year-old Islamic Jihad member, who Israel says fired five rockets Thursday at the southern city of Ashkelon. Israel says the rockets were intercepted by the Iron Missile defense system. The military accused Saad of planning an imminent attack on Israel.

The Associates Press reports that an Islamic Jihad official has confirmed Saad was targeted Sunday.

Authorities say Saad received critical injuries, while a 12-year-old boy standing nearby suffered moderate injuries.
