Kerber Upsets Williams in Australian Open Finals

Germany's Angelique Kerber kisses the trophy as Serena Williams of the U.S. claps after Kerber won their final match at the Australian Open tennis tournament at Melbourne Park, Australia, Jan. 30, 2016.

American tennis star Serena Williams has been stunned in the finals of the Australian Open, losing to seventh seed Angelique Kerber of Germany.

Kerber earned the title in the first Grand Slam event of the year Saturday, downing the world's number one player in three sets (6-4, 3-6, 6-4).

The left-handed 28-year-old Kerber was playing in her first final of a major event, while Williams — who had 23 unforced errors in the first set alone — was looking for her seventh title on the hard court in Melbourne, and 22nd Grand Slam title overall. That would have matched the record held by German Steffi Graf, who was Kerber's childhood idol.

The win boosts Kerber to number two in the world, and comes just one year after she was ousted in the first round in Melbourne.

The men's final Sunday will place top seed Novak Djokovic of Serbia against number two Andy Murray of Britain.
