South Korean Speed Skater Dies at 23

FILE - South Korea's Noh Jin-Kyu, left, speeds on track during the men's 1500 meters quarterfinal at the Short Track World Cup, in Turin, Italy.

South Korea's Noh Jin-kyu, a former world champion short track speed skater, has died of cancer at the age of 23.

His sister, speed skater Noh Seon-yeong, posted news of her brother's death Sunday on her Facebook page.

Noh won the International Skating Union's world short track speed skating championships in 2011 at age 18. His health problems began two years later, when a benign tumor was discovered in his left shoulder. He decided to delay surgery so he could compete in the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, but broke his elbow a month before the Games.

Reuters says a subsequent examination discovered he had developed a type of bone cancer called osteosarcoma.
