Strong Earthquake Rattles New Zealand City

A magnitude 5.7 earthquake shook the New Zealand city of Christchurch Sunday, but there were no immediate reports of serious damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake was centered 17 kilometers east of the city at a relatively shallow depth of 8 kilometers. No tsunami warning was issued.

It struck just days before the anniversary of a deadly temblor in 2011 that killed 185 people and destroyed the city center.

New Zealand sits on the "Ring of Fire," an arc of seismic faults around the Pacific Ocean where earthquakes are common.
