Super Typhoon Threatens Southern Japan

Japan's southernmost prefecture of Okinawa is bracing for a super typhoon, which is barreling toward the islands with torrential rains and wind gusts of around 250 kilometers per hour.

Officials at the Japan Meteorological Agency warned Monday that Typhoon Neoguri is expected to hit Okinawa early Tuesday morning and mainland Japan by Wednesday.

The agency warned people to stay indoors and prepare for possible evacuation.

Officials said the storm is expected to be downgraded by the time it hits the Japanese mainland.
