Suspected rebels have killed at least 12 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo, adding to hundreds of killings in recent months.

The attack in the northeastern province of North Kivu late Saturday comes after pledges by the government and the United Nations to reestablish security in the area of Beni, where armed groups and militias are vying for control of mineral resources.

One civil society group, Civil Society of North Kivu, reports machetes and axes were used in the latest attack on villagers and the death toll may be three times as high.

In the past, Congolese organizations blamed the Allied Democratic Forces and National Army for the Liberation of Uganda (ADF-NALU) for similar attacks.
