Tropical Storm Watch as Erika Nears Caribbean

Erika prompted a Tropical Storm Watch for Montserrat, Antigua, Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, Anguilla, Saba and St. Eustatius, and is expected to approach the Leeward Islands late Aug. 26, 2015.

Tropical storm warnings have been issued for Puerto Rico, the U.S. and British Virgin Islands and the Leeward Islands as Tropical Storm Erika approaches.

The storm's maximum sustained winds early Wednesday are near 40 mph (65 kph) with some slow strengthening forecast over the next two days.

Erika is centered about 630 kilometers (390 miles) east of Antigua and is moving west near 30 kph (18 mph).

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Erika will move over or near parts of the Leeward Islands Wednesday night and move near the Virgin Islands Thursday.

Meanwhile in the Pacific, Tropical Storm Ignacio has gained a little strength. The storm's maximum sustained winds have increased to near 50 mph (85 kph) and it's expected to strengthen to a hurricane by Thursday.

Ignacio is centered about 2,385 kilomters (1,485 miles) east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii, and is moving west near 11 kph (7 mph).
